Vadel Sims

Vadel Sims passed away on October 2, 2016.  Vadel courageously recovered from a terrible car accident four years ago to return to school and to work at the Trafigura Work and Learn Center at the Youth Empowerment Program.

Vadel, we will miss you and we are grateful for all you shared with us and taught us about never giving up.

Glenquel Emerson

Glenquel Emerson was killed by crossfire on October 4, 2016.  Glenquel was a successful graduate of The NET Charter High School and an employee of Little Beautiful Minds Nursery.

Glenquel's passing reminds us that we must continue to work harder to make sure our city is safe for every member of our community.  Too many our city's citizens are working hard and making good choices but are still hurt or killed by gun violence.

NET Alumnus at Cafe Reconcile

After graduating from The NET in December 2015, Anfernee enrolled in the culinary job training program at Cafe Reconcile (conveniently located across the street from The NET).  During his short time at Reconcile, Anfernee has made a great impression with his supervisors and peers.  Every day he shows up on time ready to learn and is always quick to put a smile on someone's face.  He is about halfway done with Reconcile's program and already looking forward to a full-time job when he's finished.

Here's Anfernee working at an event at Purloo last week.  Keep up the great work, Anfernee!

unCommon Construction Features our own Noel!

Apprentice Spotlight: Noel
"I build to become a more active listener."
Noel is a 16 year old at the NET Charter High School, an alternative school that provides "students with the skills, confidence and experience necessary to succeed in the education and career paths of their choice.” Noel’s choice: Construction.

Last semester, Noel made the NET's honor roll, earning an impressive 97% in his introductory carpentry class - which uses the National Curriculum for Construction Engineering and Research (NCCER).
At school, Noel is working toward an industry-based certification, but the construction site is where he really shines. He's a fun and incredibly energetic member of this team, and always approaches new challenges with an eager smile - ready to learn and see a job well done. He's also on track to graduate early, making the need to develop employable skills all the more crucial.
At unCommon Construction, Noel reinforces what he learns in the classroom through real world application. He’s quick to pick up new skills and eager to coach his peers and volunteers through more complex tasks. We love working with Noel, and can't wait to see how he'll choose to build his future.
“This team is the best crew I’ve ever worked with.” - Noel
